The enduring popularity of the cuckoo clock is clear from the number of models which are still bought and proudly displayed in UK homes. These black forest Cuckoo clocks are known for their quirky designs, distinctive sound and the novelty of the ornamental cuckoo which pops out of the clock at designated times. Although there are many modern versions of these fun timepieces, connoisseurs will tell you that the only authentic model is the Black Forest cuckoo clock.

Counting on quality

Brought to life in the mid 18th century, the first ever Black Forest cuckoo clock is attributed to respected clockmaker, Franz anton Ketterer - a craftsman from the village of Schonwald in south west Germany, close to the border of France. It is said that Franz was inspired by the bellows of church organs and that this led to him incorporating the distinctive sound of the male cuckoo into his clocks. Known as the founding father of the Black Forest clock, Franz’s models featured wooden gears and intricate craftsmanship which is still admired by clockmakers today.
