  2. Space watches: timepieces for astronauts

On December 15th 2015, world-famous auction house, Christie’s, put the Omega Speedmaster 50 up for sale — but this wasn’t your typical watch auction.
The watch was worn by Captain Ron Evans during his time aboard the Apollo 17. This mission is iconic in many ways, breaking several records. For example, Apollo 17 was the last manned mission to the moon and spent the longest time in lunar orbit.
As if the piece wasn’t unique enough, Evans engraved ‘FLOWN IN C.S.M TO THE MOON’, ‘APOLLO 17’ and his signature on the reverse of the watch during his time in space. Clearly, the timepiece was expected to perform extraordinarily well at the auction — and it certainly didn’t disappoint. The final selling price for the watch was $245,000, while the lot of watches achieved a total of $1,304,125.

The auction got us here at Babla’s Jewellers thinking about the most iconic space watches. Here are just a few:

    The beginning

Because they’re not worn in typical environments, watches for astronauts have to be created to the highest specification using the finest quality materials. In 1965, cosmonaut Alexei Leonov achieved two firsts — completing the first ever spacewalk while wearing the first ever watch in open space.

The Strela watch featured a two register chronograph and a continuously operating second hand. The model remained a popular choice for cosmonauts for a further 20 years after its debut.
